Seitdem haben sie unzählige Male die Welt durchquert und Lob von einer ständig wachsenden internationalen Fangemeinde erhalten. Der Katalog der Band ist entschlossen produktiv und hat die ganze Zeit an Tiefe und Statur gewonnen, unabhängig von Besetzungswechseln oder den Launen der Gläubigen. In jüngerer Zeit haben CRADLE OF FILTH eine unverkennbare heiße Serie von Kreativität und Dringlichkeit erreicht. Als sich ein neues Line-Up um die Entstehung von "Hammer Of The Witches" im Jahr 2015 zusammenschloss, trieben neue Impulse die Band zu neuen Höhen, da die revitalisierte Crew auf der ganzen Welt gefragter wurde als je zuvor. "Cryptoriana - The Seductiveness Of Decay" aus dem Jahr 2017 wiederholte den Trick mit noch explosiverer Extravaganz. Bis eine globale Pandemie die Musikindustrie zum Stillstand brachte, waren CRADLE OF FILTH fast permanent unterwegs und absolut verdammt flogen. Daher sollte es niemanden überraschen, dass das brandneue Album der Band, "Existence Is Futile", eine weitere monumentale und elektrisierende Reise durch die Dunkelheit ist. "Wir haben dieses Gefühl der Dynamik genossen, seit dieses Line-Up zusammenkam", sagt Dani Filth. "Es war ein Team, das wir schnell für eine Tour zusammenstellen mussten, und weil die Band auf diese Weise so viel besser funktionierte als zuvor, beschlossen wir, sie beizubehalten. In jüngerer Zeit war 2019 unser geschäftigstes Jahr aller Zeiten, wir waren buchstäblich überall." Beflügelt von diesen jüngsten Triumphen nahmen CRADLE OF FILTH 2020 "Existence Is Futile" auf und fügten die Platte isoliert in den Grindstone Studios in Suffolk mit Studioguru Scott Atkins (Devilment / Benediction / Vader) zusammen. Obwohl sofort als das Werk dieser altgedienten Blackhearts erkennbar, ist das dreizehnte CRADLE OF FILTH-Album ein völlig anderes Biest als seine unmittelbaren Vorgänger. Pechschwarz, pervers und manchmal absurd brutal und extrem, hängt es mit hypnotisierender Fluidität zusammen. Es ist auch absolut gerammt mit riesigen, mitreißenden Melodien und Momenten atemberaubender Erfindung. Niemand konnte die giftig eingängigen Worte wie "How Many Tears To Nurture A Rose?" oder die monströse Ballade "Discourse Between A Man And His Soul" natürlich mit etwas anderem als CRADLE OF FILTH verwechseln, aber "Existence Is Futile" bestätigt, dass die Erkundungsinstinkte der Band so scharf bleiben wie eh und je. "Das vorherige Album war sehr reich verziert und fummelig und schlängelte sich überall", bemerkt Dani. "Wir haben versucht, die Zutaten aller CRADLE-Platten auf ein Album zu packen. Und nachdem das aus unseren Systemen gespült wurde, haben wir uns diesmal bemüht, ein wenig zu experimentieren. Obwohl ich dieses Wort hasse, weil ihr wisst, was passiert, wenn Bands aus früheren guten Besitzverhältnissen ankündigen, dass sie "experimentieren"! Es geht normalerweise total auf! (lacht) Natürlich gibt es wirklich dumm brutale Songs auf der Platte, aber dann gehen wir hin und werfen etwas Balladescheres in den Mix. Aber trotz der vorherrschenden Extreme wollten wir immer noch etwas wirklich Eingängiges machen. Es gibt also auch, Gott bewahre, himmelstürmende Refrains!" Untermauert durch seine riesige und entwaffnend biologische Produktion, ist "Existence Is Futile" eindeutig das dunkelste und beunruhigendste Album, das CRADLE OF FILTH seit einiger Zeit gemacht haben. Das für die Band typische verdrehte Geschichtenerzählen zugunsten entsetzter Einblicke in die sterbliche Leere und des Grübelns über die unvermeidliche Zerstörung des Lebens auf der Erde, seine Schärfe und Relevanz für die Ansammlung von Albträumen, mit denen die Menschheit im Jahr 2021 konfrontiert ist, ist unmöglich zu ignorieren, auch wenn Dani Filth nicht unvernünftigerweise darauf besteht, dass er keine globale Pandemie erwartet hat, als die Nachrichtensongs geschrieben wurden. "Das Album handelt von Existenzialismus, existenzieller Angst und Angst vor dem Unbekannten. Das Konzept wurde nicht durch die Pandemie geschaffen. Auch das Artwork für diese Platte wurde von dem lettischen Visionär Arthur Berzinsh geschaffen, der auch die letzten beiden Alben eingekleidet hat, und das ist überaus schön, aber auch apokalyptisch." Mit dem bestmöglichen Timing sollten CRADLE OF FILTH bereits während dieser langen, einsamen Monate des Lockdowns im Jahr 2020 ein neues Album machen. Nachdem er die Gelegenheit mit beiden Händen ergriffen hat, erklärt Dani, dass die unvermeidliche Isolation vom Rest der Welt der bestmögliche Anreiz war, die Arbeit zu erledigen, und fügte gleichzeitig der ganzen Erfahrung viel unheimliche Atmosphäre hinzu. "Wir verbrachten den ganzen Tag im Studio und sahen niemanden, und dann fuhr ich durch eine völlig verlassene Stadt nach Hause. Es fühlte sich einfach so an, als würden Scott und ich beide in dieser in sich geschlossenen Schlafkammer existieren. Es war ein tolles Gefühl, aber sehr surreal. Wir haben den ganzen Sommer gearbeitet, wenn das Wetter fabelhaft war. Es waren nur ich und Scott für den größten Teil von fünf Monaten, die durch die Lockdowns arbeiteten! Das Gute war, während wir dort waren, wurden mindestens drei der Songs komplett überarbeitet. Ich habe mir die Demos kürzlich noch einmal angehört und dachte: 'Verdammt, warum haben wir das nicht auf das Album gebracht?' Aber wir haben es auf das Album gebracht, es hat einfach einen totalen Gesichtswechsel bekommen. Das war also ein gutes Nebenprodukt der Lockdown-Situation." Klanglich gesehen ist "Existence Is Futile" mit Abstand das kraftvollste und dramatischste Album, das CRADLE OF FILTH je gemacht haben: Es ist der Sound der beneidenswerten Chemie der Band auf der Bühne, die ins Studio überschwappt und jedes Mitglied der Band auf ein neues Maß an Intensität treibt. In Kombination mit den erwarteten labyrinthischen Arrangements und Momenten des faszinierenden Bombasts ist "Existence Is Futile" vielleicht die bisher lebendigste Darstellung der CRADLE OF FILTH-Erfahrung. "Scott neigte definitiv dazu, das Album so live wie möglich klingen zu lassen, vom Schlagzeug aufwärts", sagt Dani. "Wir haben auch die Song-Arrangements so gestaltet, dass sie ziemlich prägnant sind. Wenn es einen Hauch von Unordnung gab, haben wir es entfernt. Wir hatten den Anspruch, »Existence Is Futile« klanglich massiv mit maximaler Klarheit zu machen, besonders wenn die Songs mit einer Million Meilen pro Stunde für dich kommen. Crawling King Chaos', 'Black Smoke Curling From The Lips of War' und 'The Dying Of The Embers' sind ein würdiger Beweis für dieses Ergebnis." Außerdem werden eingefleischte Fans begeistert sein zu erfahren, dass Horror-Ikone Doug 'Pinhead' Bradley eine willkommene Rückkehr in die CRADLE-Falte macht und seine Dulcet-Töne dem epischen "Suffer Our Dominion" und einem der Bonustracks der kommenden neuen Platte leiht, wie Dani erklärt. "Neben dem Album gibt es auch zwei Bonustracks, von denen einer der Höhepunkt der 'Her Ghost In The Fog'-Trilogie ist, die auf »Midian« begann. Dafür zögerten wir nicht, unseren Freund und Schauspieler Doug Bradley zu engagieren, um seine erzählerische Rolle wieder aufzunehmen. Doug lebt in Pittsburgh, das er als "The Pit" bezeichnet, also haben wir seine Erzählung über Skype von seinem lokalen Studio aus geleitet. Er übernimmt diese fast David Attenborough-artige Rolle auf 'Suffer Our Dominion', dem vielleicht politisch scharfsinnigsten Song, den wir in letzter Zeit geschrieben haben. Als Band schrecken wir normalerweise davor zurück, uns in die Politik zu verzweigen, aber es ist etwas, das ausgespuckt werden musste.
